A cat’s work is never done, especially when that work includes keeping government officials safe from the threat of mice. Following the Brexit vote, David Cameron stepped down as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom as Theresa May took his place. But the question on everyone’s mind was, “What will happen to Larry the Cat?”
Larry was adopted from an animal rescue center in 2011 to help with 10 Downing Street’s mouse problem. Though he took a while to prove himself as an adept mouse hunter and was even trashed by the press for his love of naps, he became a beloved fixture in the world of British politics. And, apparently, he’s here to stay, as he will remain at his post despite Cameron’s resignation.
The mouser continues to spend his days greeting visitors and is said to get along well with President Barack Obama. The nation sends the cat treats and gifts on a daily basis, and his approval rating seems to be higher than any other political figure in the country. Maybe that’s because, in a time of turmoil, Larry is a dependable source of comfort. We cat lovers know that if anything can bring a country together, it’s a cat.
Are you happy to see Larry staying at his post? Do you think more government buildings should have mouser cats? Let us know in the comments below!
