How Should You React If Someone Insults Your Cat?

Have you ever been in a situation where you happen to overhear someone say something mean, insulting or even downright nasty about a cat? If hearing those sort of comments stirs up a little reactionary rage inside yourself, imagine how you’d feel if that same person actually insulted your own beloved cat?

There’s a chance the insult wasn’t meant to be entirely intentional. Maybe you were showing a picture of your cat on your phone and it caused someone overlooking to make a negative comment, perhaps commenting on your cat’s weight or appearance. But it’s still going to leave you smarting, right?

This is obviously a natural reaction. But what’s the best way for you to react to the person who’s just insulted your cat? How do you make sure you defend your feline’s honor while also avoiding coming off as an unhinged individual?

Well, depending on the severity of the insult, you could politely point out to the person that you’d never think to insult their own kids. Of course, this can throw up the response, “Yes, but cats are not children.” Even if you consider your cats to be part of the family, it’s best to point out the broader comparison you’re making is that your cat is an important and loved part of your life and it’s pretty mean-spirited for someone to say something bad about her.

At this point, the person who’s just insulted your cat may offer up an apology before you can both move on with the conversation.

But what if they fail to see your point? Then it’s smart to take the moral high ground and accept that some people are just never going to understand the charm and appeal of cats. So just console yourself with the fact that you’re in the right on this one — and you’ve got an awesome cat waiting for you at home.
