Friskies to give award for best Internet cat videos

Thousands of cat videos are posted on the Internet on a seemingly daily basis, and they feature felines doing a variety of things. One of those videos could win $15,000, as Friskies announces their first annual awards competition to celebrate filmed cat excellence, The Friskies.

“We love cat videos because they showcase the imagination of both cats and their owners,” Friskies brand manager Shaun Belongie says. “Some may say that there are too many cat videos on the Internet already. We don’t think so. We’re launching The Friskies because we think the next great cat video is just waiting to be discovered.”

Categories include spontaneous cat behavior, humor, indoor adventure, and “Catch All” — videos that don’t fit into the other three classifications.

The Grand Prize winner will get $15,000; the winner of each category will get $2,500, and 12 finalists will each receive a one-year supply of Friskies cat food and a “Cat-uette” (statue).

Friskies will also donate up to 250,000 cans of food to nationwide rescue organizations and shelters, based on the number of entries, votes, and views on the Friskies Facebook page.

All videos must be under three minutes in length and will be judged by the following criteria: sense of a story being told, audience appeal and entertainment quality, originality, technical production, portraying cat’s perspective, overall artistic impression, cat playfulness or quirks, and cinematography.

Winners will be chosen by a four-member panel.

The contest starts today, and is open for submissions until October 12, 2012. For more information, please visit Friskies.com.
