Why Do People Opt To Declaw Their Cats?

Declawing is a cosmetic procedure usually performed under the idea that it will prevent a cat from scratching furniture or damaging things. In rare cases, removal of the claw is performed because of an injury or tumor, and if the veterinarian sees it as a necessary procedure. But declawing is primarily performed for the human’s benefit. More and more cities and states in the U.S. are banning the declawing of cats as an inhumane and barbaric practice yet some people still do it.

What’s a common target for a cat’s sharp claws? You guessed it: furniture. Cat scratching can be a destructive habit. Frayed couch cushions, gouged armchairs, shredded curtains – repairing or replacing these furnishings can be annoying, not to mention expensive but if furniture and belongings are your main concern, you may not want to adopt a cat to begin with. Try a parakeet or a fish.
