Heatstroke in cats, also known by the medical term hyperthermia, is a condition that comes about when a cat’s body temperature rises too high.
When a cat’s body cannot regulate its temperature properly, the cat suffers from heat exhaustion and, if the condition is not regulated, organ damage can occur. Some cases can even prove to be fatal.
If you see the signs of hyperthermia in your cat, then you must get to a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and advice. Here’s what you should know about the symptoms, causes, and treatments for heatstroke in cats.
Symptoms Of Heatstroke In Cats
Heatstroke in cats can produce a wide range of symptoms that vary in severity. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- Panting
- Acting restless
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Sweating a lot from the paws
- Very rapid breathing
- Shock
- High body temperature
- Seizure
- Tongue and mouth turning red
Causes Of Heatstroke In Cats
The most common cause of heatstroke in cats is being exposed to a high environmental temperature.
High levels of humidity can also contribute, along with a lack of access to fresh water and shade.
In some cases, too much exercise can also cause hyperthermia in cats.
Veterinary Treatments
If you worry that your cat is suffering from heatstroke, your veterinarian will want to carry out a physical examination and also ask about any recent situations or circumstances that might have brought on a case.
The vet will also take your cat’s body temperature to confirm whether they are suffering from hyperthermia. In general, body temperatures above 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit are considered to be high, while temperatures over 105 degrees need immediate medical care.
When it comes to treatment, vets often recommend the use of cool water and ice packs. Vets may also use intravenous fluid therapy to treat the condition. Your vet will constantly monitor you cat’s body temperature throughout the cooling process.
