Griseofulvin For Cats: Uses, Dosage, & Side Effects

Griseofulvin for cats is an anti-fungal medicine that veterinarians primarily prescribe to treat ringworm, along with some other hair and skin infections. It’s the generic name for a drug that’s also sold under the brand names Fulvicin and Grisactin.

The medication works by preventing the growth and spread of fungus. It comes in both tablet and oral suspension forms, and you’ll need a veterinarian’s prescription to purchase it. Closely follow your vet’s instructions for the correct and safe dosage and frequency.

Here’s what you should know about the uses, dosage, and side effects of griseofulvin for cats.

Uses Of Griseofulvin For Cats

Veterinarians generally prescribe griseofulvin for cats to treat cases of ringworm. The anti-fungal medicine can also treat similar fungal infections that target the cat’s hair, skin and nails.

When administered correctly, the drug works by preventing the growth of fungus. However, due to the higher potential for side effects in cats, veterinarians may seek alternative treatments and not prescribe griseofulvin.

The following is a guideline for typical use of the drug in cats and must not replace your veterinarian’s advice for your individual pet.

Veterinarians usually prescribe griseofulvin in a dosage of 25 mg per pound of the animal’s body weight given every 24 hours.

Your vet will prescribe the drug to your cat based on the severity and spread of the fungal infection that they’re treating. They’ll also determine the duration of treatment.

It’s important to always follow the exact dosage and administration instructions as detailed by your vet. This includes the length of time you should give the medicine to your cat.

Side Effects Of Griseofulvin For Cats

Griseofulvin can produce a range of side effects in cats. The side effects can include vomiting, lack of appetite, and diarrhea. The drug can also result in birth defects and should never be prescribed for pregnant felines.

In the case of an overdose, contact your emergency veterinarian right away.
