A cat from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, has released her debut charity single “Meow” and is aiming for the sought-after “Christmas No. 1” spot, as per BBC. Nala is better known as “Nala the Station Cat” on social media. As such, she has already become a local sensation at Stevenage railway station for her friendly interaction with passing commuters. However, the 4-year-old ginger tabby is now gaining nationwide recognition after Scott Mills’ BBC Radio 2 show featured her new song in November.
‘Meow’ — A charitable single for a pawsitive cause
The single “Meow” is the collaborative work of musicians Danny Kirsch and Joe Killington. Nala also receives credit as the vocalist and songwriter for the track.
The proceeds from this song will go to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and Feed Up Warm Up — a Stevenage-based homelessness charity.
BBC Three Counties Radio was the first to play this track on Sunday, Nov. 12, prior to its official release on Nov. 15. Additionally, a music video for the song — filmed at Stevenage railway station — will be released before Christmas.
The track has garnered praise from critics, including Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills, who on his afternoon show described it as “quite good.” Both Nala and her owner — Natasha Ambler — have hopes that it could compete with charity musicians LadBaby’s five-year run for the top spot in the Christmas chart.
Justin Dealey — a DJ for BBC Three Counties Radio — said, “I’m slightly lost for words.” Ambler responded, “So am I to be fair.”
The musical cat is currently without a manager. According to her owner, “We’re all doing our emails ourselves; it’s quite new to us.” She added, “We’ll start small and hopefully she gets in the charts, but number one would be fantastic.”
Nala the Station Cat was not available for comment.
